Founded in 2007 in America's biotech capital, San Diego, Millennium Laboratories is rapidly becoming the Urine Drug Testing (UDT) resource of choice for physicians and staff focused on the treatment of chronic pain. Even in a downturn economy Millennium Laboratories has experienced explosive growth, continuing to post double-digit growth quarter over quarter. Our company is the only major Urine Drug Testing Laboratory licensed as a training facility for Toxicologist Scientists.
Certified, state-of-the-art advanced training at Millennium’s 40,000 sq/ft. campus is an integral component of the University of California, San Diego’s (UCSD) doctoral program in Pharmacy. Led by our Laboratory Director Amadeo Pesce, Ph.D., world-renowned Toxicologist and author, the Millennium Laboratories team are experts in mass spectrometry and high throughput chemistry.
Dr. Pesce is past president of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry, Professor Emeritus at University of Cincinnati and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Pesce holds Clinical Laboratory Director's Licenses in California and Nevada.
With thirty-five years of hands on experience in clinical laboratories, Dr. Pesce brings a seasoned perspective to our busy laboratory. This esteemed scientist inspires the staff, many of whom were schooled with his textbooks. He continually updates his already vast knowledge by participating in the journal club of the San Diego Poison Control Center. Dr. Pesce oversees all aspects of Millennium's analytical procedures with a practiced eye and a clear vision for the future of therapeutic drug testing.
Our staff is composed of highly trained and licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientists with an average of fifteen years experience conducting analysis on patient specimens. Each of our scientists has passed the rigorous education and testing standards of the state of California and is well-qualified to serve the needs of our physician clients and their patients.
The complex analytical procedures involved in therapeutic urine drug testing necessitates a thorough understanding of specimen analysis, which includes computer interfaces, automation, medical terminology, chromatography, and mass spectrometry.
The members of our clinical staff hail from diverse geographical backgrounds and bring a range of interests and specialized experiences to Millennium Laboratories that runs from high throughput chemistry and microbiology to toxicology and immunology. Together these intelligent, highly motivated scientists function as a cohesive, closely-knit team.
Dr. Joseph Shurman is a well-known expert in pain management. He is a lecturer, consultant and researcher on patient management and pain-related topics.
As a consultant for Millennium Laboratories, Dr. Shurman is available to our network of pain practitioners for guidance and clinical judgment related to the care of chronic pain patients on opioids and on managing the practice risks associated with prescribing these necessary medications.
Dr. Shurman is founder of the Share The Risk model of pain patient management. The fundamental premise of the model is that no one physician, no matter how well educated, competent, compassionate or committed can adequately meet all the needs of patients with chronic, intractable pain. The model calls for a multidisciplinary team approach to treat the chronic pain patient. The Share The Risk model continues to evolve in the United States. On a national level the Share The Risk Model was a catalyst for the development of an education program called Emerging Solutions in Pain. Emerging Solutions is designed to assist pain management physicians in overcoming the challenges they encounter by providing practical clinical tools and resources. It has an Advisory Board of acclaimed thought leaders in pain management and addiction, of which Dr. Shurman is one.
Dr. Shurman is also Chairman of Pain Management at Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla, California and Chairman of Pain Management at Casa Palmera, a multidisciplinary inpatient and outpatient center for individuals battling addiction, chemical dependency, emotional trauma and eating disorders. He also serves on the Board of the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute where he offers expertise in neuropathic pain.
Dr. Shurman is on the Editorial Advisory Board of Practical Pain Management Journal and is frequently quoted by the media on timely issues surrounding pain treatment. In the past, Dr. Shurman held positions as Chair of the Department of Anesthesia at Scripps Memorial Hospital; Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of California, San Diego; Chair of the Pain Management Committee of Anesthesia Services Medical; Medical Director of Clinical Research at Anesthesia Services Medical Group; and Clinical Instructor at the University of Washington when their model pain care center for the U.S. was developed in the 1970’s. He is also the Medical Director of Nature and Culture International, a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of biological and cultural diversity. He is a popular lecturer on pain topics, both nationally and internationally.
Dr. Shurman received his medical degree from Temple University Medical School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He then completed a Rotating Internship at Chestnut Hill Hospital in Philadelphia, with an affiliation at Jefferson Medical School. This was followed by an Anesthesia Residency at Harvard Medical School (Massachusetts General Hospital) which included three months of Pediatric Anesthesia focus and an Intensive Care Rotation at Philadelphia Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Murray Rosenthal, a board-certified psychiatrist and Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, is our Chief Medical Officer. He knows the field of pain management from both the professional and personal side. He is a former chronic pain patient who underwent five major spine surgeries. As Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Rosenthal brings 26 years of diversified experience as a clinician, researcher and consultant to our program and provides a great value to our network of physicians and their support staff.
Within Millennium Laboratories, Dr. Rosenthal works with our senior scientific staff to develop educational and research programs that meet the needs of our pain practitioners, their staff and patients. He is available to our network of physicians for lectures, discussions and consultations.
Prior to joining us, Dr. Rosenthal was Senior Medical Director and CEO of California Clinical Trials, an internationally recognized, multi-site, phase 1-4 CNS research group. During his tenure he conducted over 450 clinical trials in all areas of Central Nervous System (CNS) research.
Prior to medical school, Dr. Rosenthal spent four years as a graduate student in biochemistry and experimental pathology at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. His medical school training was at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine after which he completed a medical-surgical internship at the University of Rochester. Dr. Rosenthal became board certified in Psychiatry after completing a residency program in Psychiatry at the University of California-San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center. In 2004 he was honored by the American Psychiatric Association by becoming a Fellow.
His research and professional career began under the guidance of the late, world famous psycho-pharmacologist, Dr. John Feighner. His experiences have included many positions and directorships; Medical Director on an inpatient eating disorders program, consultant to the head injury and heart transplantation programs at Sharp Memorial Hospital, and working closely with several primary care networks located in Southern California.
A recognized industry leader, Dr. Rosenthal has lectured internationally, nationally and locally to colleagues, allied health professionals and the lay public and has appeared on many television and radio programs as a guest expert. Published on a wide variety of topics in psychiatry, sleep, pain and medical management of secondary emotional disorders, Dr. Rosenthal co-authored the reference book, Accelerating Global Drug Development. His 2007 original, sleep center based pilot research project raised important issues about the impact of proper sleep on pain management and neuro-cognition, a topic he is frequently asked to comment upon when he addresses pain specialists.
